Deurne

Deurne is a town in the eastern part of the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands. Surrounded by nature reserves such as the Peel, the historic town and municipality have some typical southern Netherlands charm.

Understand

The municipality consists of multiple smaller towns and villages, Liessel, Vlierden, Neerkant and Helenaveen, as well as several former pendant villages and parishes such as the Sint-Jozefparochie, Zeilberg en Walsberg. Most of these towns are surrounded by farms. Pig farming is especially big in the municipality, but farming in general can be more diverse.

Deurne borders directly with the Limburg province. In 2021, it was home to 32,000 people.

History

By the 13th century there were numerous settlements in what we would now call Deurne. At around the same time other villages in the municipality formed such as Vlierden and Liessel. The people in Deurne have historically largely made their living by agriculture.

During the 19th century the there was an increased need in peat from the nearby Peel. Out of this need multiple villages formed including Neerkant and Helenaveen.

Deurne was also home to Hub van Doorne who kickstarted the Dutch car industry with his 'Van Doorne's Automobielfabriek' better known by its acronym, DAF. As a result, there's a statue of him and his wife, near the center of town.

By train

Deurne has one station which is served by sprinters and by intercity trains in the directions of Venlo and Eindhoven. The closest other stations are Helmond Brouwhuis in one direction and Horst-Sevenum in the other direction.

By car

The N270 goes from Eindhoven through Deurne and ends up in Well near the German border.

By bus

The main bus operator in the region is Bravo, but you can also see Arriva buses departing and arriving which mainly target the Limburg province.

  • 🌍 Ruins of the Groot Kasteel (great castle), Haageind 37, 5751 BB Deurne. Destroyed during the end of World War II, this former castle has since served many different purposes such as a teahouse and now a nightclub.

The park is approximately 3 hectares in size and consists of: Barefoot path The barefoot path is approximately 1.5 hectares in size and is a true adventure. Relive the adventures of Heintje and Matje Beekman. The Veenderij. The restaurant has 70 seats and the terrace can accommodate at least 150 guests. Brewery de Peelreus with tasting room and beer garden Museum In the old home of the Kortooms family, there is now a museum about the writer. Peat field and sod hut There is still a large layer of peat to be seen where peat is cut for demonstrations. Art garden Artists exhibit their works of art in the art garden all year round.
