As an EU citizen I have a Canadian ETA. I am travelling to Canada from Dublin airport. There is US preclearance; is it also for travel to Canada or only for the US?

Preclearance is for flights to the US, for all passengers on those flights.

It is not guaranteed to be available for all flights to the US, but it seems to be for most.

There is no preclearance for any other country as far as I know; I have never heard of preclearance for flights to Canada.

The USA has preclearance in certain airports around the world because of the high volume of people entering from those places. They can screen and reject passengers before entering the country to prevent large amounts of people having to be sent back, or held for a few days at the USA expense before a flight back. So to save cost and added security they screen in advance, but only at some airports.

Canada does not do preclearance in any counties, always on arrival.

Toronto pearson airport, in Canada, has so many flights to the USA that both terminal 1 and 3 buildings are each about half USA precleared zones, for flights only to the USA.

I had a connection when returning from a 3rd country twice, and both those countries did not have preclearance, it was a flight from Peru to miami, and from costa rica to Miami. both times i went through US customs at miami on arrival, and then my connection back to toronto (and both on US airlines).
