I am visiting Sweden as a tourist. My visa allows me to stay in the country for 7 days.

I booked the first flight for a Saturday and the return flight for the next Saturday.

When I was booking my flights, I thought that the duration of the stay is calculated based on the time I land and the time I leave. But some people told me it isn't. When the final day starts, it is counted as a full day. So that would cause me to stay 8 days instead of 7...

There are no fights on Fridays nor Thursdays.

The solution I came with is to go to the airport on Friday night, talk to the authorities hoping they would understand that I just didn't understand how days are calculated. I can stay the night there if necessary.

Is this a possible option?

Indeed, that is how it works

You are responsible of your actions in fulfilling the visa conditions

You could try to get a visa extension

You can apply for an extension to your visa if your combined period of stay in the Schengen countries will not exceed 90 days in a 180-day period.

This is possible in the following cases:

  • force majeure – unforeseen events that prevent you from leaving Sweden or the Schengen countries, e.g. extreme weather
  • humanitarian reasons – if you or a close relative who lives in Sweden has been taken seriously ill, for example.

You can be granted a visa extension

  • if you have compelling personal reasons – this includes health care or a business trip.

But the issue is

The reason behind your need to extend the visa must have occurred after your entry into Sweden.

Unless I'm understanding the question wrong, this is not the case

The solution I came with is to go to the airport on friday night, talk to the authorities and see of I can stay in the airport for the night as if I left the country on friday.

Extremely unlikely, as you can't do that on arrivals (If your flight lands at 11:50pm, and your visa starts at 00:00am, you wouldn't be allowed to board and probably be denied entry if you succeeded in boarding the flight)

Your best bet is probably to get a flight out to a country where you're allowed in visa-free and go from there.
