Does any embassy like US, UK or Schengen scrutinize where the purchases are made showing in a bank statement? For example of someone pays for regular counselling or therapy by ATM card it would show in the bank statement. Is it a problem if trying to get a tourist visa?

Generally, embassies and consulates that process visa applications, such as those for the US, UK, or Schengen countries, do not scrutinize the specific nature of purchases appearing in a bank statement unless there is a reason to suspect fraud or the transactions are relevant to the visa application.

What Embassies Look for in Bank Statements

  1. Financial Stability: They want to ensure you have sufficient funds to cover your trip and any unforeseen expenses.

  2. Legitimacy: They check that the account and transactions are genuine and consistent with your declared income and financial background.

  3. Consistency: A steady flow of deposits and expenditures typically indicates a reliable financial situation.

Transactions like Counseling or Therapy

  • Irrelevance: Payments for regular counseling or therapy, or any other personal expenses, are usually irrelevant to visa decisions. They will not affect the application as long as the financial stability criteria are met.
  • Confidentiality: Embassies do not delve into the details of every expense unless something seems irregular (e.g., extremely large transactions, unexplained cash deposits, or withdrawals suggesting potential illegal activity).
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Therapy or counseling expenses are not viewed negatively in most visa contexts, as these are seen as routine and personal.

When It Could Raise Questions

  • If the bank statement shows large, unusual, or unexplained transactions, it might trigger additional scrutiny.
  • If the expenses significantly outweigh income or savings, it could raise concerns about financial stability.

Unless there is something highly unusual in your bank statement, therapy or counseling expenses should not impact your visa application.
