Hello everyone :) I'm planning a trip to Austria and apart from Vienna, I'd like to visit some picturesque towns in Danube river valley.

I like to spot potential parking places before my journey starts, so I'm not losing time to find something when I arrive.

Most of the parkings with the barriers are really straightforward in terms of rules, the price is visible when entering. Yet there are some spots along the streets with conditions stated underneath.

Quick Google Translate gives:

What exactly does this mean? I understand, that the parking is not free of charge (I probably should use the parking ticket machine or the proper app) and I cannot stay there longer than 3 hours. But does this apply only on specified dates? What with time outside them? Is the parking free (and the 180 min. max time still applies) or I can leave the car for the whole, for example, Sunday? Or the 180 min. time limit applies only on the selected dates and I should pay for it regardless of the day and time?

I'd be really glad for the help :) I know the street signs are not the place to explain stuff to outsiders but I'm really lost here ;)

Let me rephrase the meaning:

The restrictions apply on working days (Werktagen) Monday to Friday between 08:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 18:00 (8am-12pm and 2pm-6pm) and on Saturdays between 08:00-12:00 (8am-12pm). During these periods, you are only allowed to park for 3 hours and have to pay.

Outside the stated periods, also on public holidays (not a working day), the restrictions do not apply. You can park for as long as you like and don't have to pay. So yes, you can leave your car here the entire Sunday if you so wish.

I think "on working days" is not for specifying when all restrictions apply, but that it specifies when the 180 minutes maximum applies, because otherwise the information would be doubled (as there is a "Monday to Friday" section with times the restriction applies).

That means that the sign says:

  • The parking spaces are subject to a fee on Monday to Saturday between 8:00 and 12:00, and additionally on Monday to Friday from 14:00 to 18:00.
  • On working days, parking is only permitted for 180 minutes.

"Kurzparkzone" means short-term parking zone. The zones are always signified by the round no-parking symbol on a white rectangular sign. The zones can be huge, when you leave the zone, you see this sign:

Inside the zone there is often little indication that you're inside a zone, parking meters are a good sign that you're probably inside one. Also, some cities mark the entry and exit of a short-term parking zone with a wide colorful line on the asphalt, often blue. Look out for those. Since it's difficult to spot the short-term parking zone signs while finding your way in an unfamiliar city, I suggest to google "parking in " before you go, especially for the bigger cities, like Krems.

The round no parking sign with one red line on blue only applies to one side of one street, it allows stopping for 10 minutes if there's no extra information beneath. Likewise the sign with the red cross on blue means no stopping at all. The rectangular signs (like the one you show) are the ones you have to watch out for. Those signify the short-term parking zones which can cover entire neighbourhoods.

If the sign contains the word "gebührenpflichtig" you have to pay with the app or machine. Otherwise, you have to set the blue parking clock and put it behind the windshield.

Restrictions (both max time and fees) always only apply during the times mentioned, outside those times parking is free. Except for the most touristy spots you can expect free street parking at night, on weekends and on holidays (but check the signs).
