I travel from Canada to the US perhaps 1-3 times per year. My Nexus card will expire in a couple of months, but I'm not sure anymore if it's worth renewing it for the following reasons:

  1. As Canadian PR I am not eligible for TSA PreCheck in the US!
  2. I ususally carry some snack foods, which means I get sent to another line upon entering the US or Canada.

Should I reconsider? It seems much easier to renew Nexus than to reapply for it after letting it expire.

Reasons why you might want to renew Nexus can include:

  • It expedites entry to the US by land in several places, allowing you to use automated lines not available to non-Nexus travellers
  • There is a fast track for Nexus holders back into Canada
  • Within the five year validity of a Nexus card you will have the opportunity to become a Canadian citizen, and at least one of your objections will then go away, and several other benefits will become available.
  • At some point in the next five years you may travel without snacks
  • Nexus is still very cheap for what it does

But most importantly:

  • Due to an ongoing dispute between US and Canadian customs (which is not going to get better any time soon) applications for a new Nexus cards are extremely delayed, and require travel to a very restricted set of locations. Therefore if you were to let your Nexus lapse, you would face almost impossible hurdles if you were to ever want to reapply. Given the very low cost of Nexus, in my opinion it is very much worth renewing it even if there is only a remote likelihood of wanting it sometime in the future.
