I am looking for ways to do an around-the-globe trip with no air travel. I want to visit both the US and Japan along the way, and need tourist visas for both. The problem with the Japan tourist visa is that it is only issued for 90 days, and based on the desired timeframe of my trip I would already be outside of my home country at the point when I could apply for a Japan visa. Thus, I would like to apply for the visa along the way, preferably in the US. A quick search tells me that for a foreign person to apply for a Japan visa in the US, they need to prove their legal status in the US, which is supposed to be more long-term than a tourist visit.

Is there some exception to this rule or another way around this?
