Since getting a new passport with an X gender marker, I seem to be attracting gremlins in any machines that require me to scan my passport - both the airline’s baggage self-service bag drop (which previously worked with my old national ID card) and the eGates in two separate countries refused to read the thing. In all cases I got pointed at a human, who scanned my passport and didn’t pick up any issues with it. I’ve successfully used the same passport to apply for an ETA as well, so it doesn’t seem like it’s fundamentally broken. In one instance an airline employee tried to help me scan the passport at the self-service kiosk, but that didn’t work either, so I’m assuming it’s not just that I’m scanning it wrong. I have no cover on the passport or anything either. Is this a known issue with an X gender marker (which a human looking at things can deal with but a machine can’t), or have I missed anything/can I do anything to fix it so I can avoid the hassle next time?
