I have a flight from Tokyo (Narita) to Mumbai with a 7-hour layover in Hanoi. I am an Indian citizen traveling alone with VietJet Air. I would like to get out of the airport and do some sightseeing. Is it worth it?

Can be done but will require some planning and monitoring.

  1. Make sure you have proper immigration credentials to enter Vietnam
  2. Plan a itinerary of the place(s) you like to see upfront.
  3. I would recommend booking a private car to pick you up from the airport and take you back there (based on bullet #2). The provider we used last time charges currently US$ 28.00 for a round trip.
  4. Make sure you have your boarding pass for your connecting flight in hand before you leave the airport.

If things go normal, you should be in the city about 1.5 hours after arrival. You should depart the city no later than 3 hours before departure, so you will have 2h to 2.5h of sightseeing time. You may have to adjust this as needed: flight delays, rush hour traffic, etc. Things are likely to go faster if you have status with the airline or fly business class.

When you return to the airport, you can head directly to your departure gate, i.e. you only need to pass immigration and security. It actually helps if you check luggage at your original departure location. If you happen to run a little late, they are more likely to make an attempt to find you and wait a bit, since otherwise they may have to unload your bags.

Is it worth it?

That really depends on your personal preferences and comfort level with a little bit of travel risk.
