Southernmost continent and mostly covered in ice, it is the coldest place on Earth with temperatures reaching -89°C. There is no permanent human presence on the continent but there are research centres set up by many countries to study everything from prehistoric atmosphere which could be found trapped inside the ice to the lifeforms such as penguins, which only live in Antarctica.
