The largest city in Canada's Alberta Province. According to Wikipedia article, the earliest people are known to have settled there at least 11000 years ago but had the first presence of European settlers in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The city got it's big break with the oil boom when oil was discovered in Alberta in 1902.
The city hosted the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.
