GRU has two passenger terminals connected airside, divided into four piers. The busiest airport in Brazil, it is the primary hub for Avianca Brazil (Terminal 2) and TAM Airlines (Terminals 2 and 3), and a focus city for Gol Transportes Aéreos (Terminal 1) and Azul Brazilian Airlines (Terminal 4).

The airport is located 25 km (16 mi) northeast of the Zona Central de São Paulo. Until the CPTM Line 13 is completed in 2017, the closest rail service is at Portuguesa-Tietê on Line 1 (Azul/Blue), where bus connections are available. Bus service is also available from Barra Funda, República, and Tatuapé on Line 3 (Vermelha/Red).

The main access road is Rodovia Helio Smidt, which connects to Via Dutra, highway BR-116/SP-060. In addition to taxis and rental cars, there are a variety of regular and express buses connecting the airport to the city and to other areas. TAM and Gol also operate shuttles for their passengers transferring between flights at GRU and CGH.
