People who have historical ties to a particular territory and are culturally or historically distinct from other majority populations in the area.
There is no single, universally accepted definition of the term "indigenous people"; however, the most often invoked elements are:
- the voluntary perpetuation of cultural distinctiveness
- an experience of subjugation, marginalization and dispossession, and
- self-identification.
Some examples include: Inuit in Canada, Native Americans in US, Ainu in Japan etc.
