Mayotte is an island off the east coast of Africa, north-west of madagascar in the Indian Ocean. It is geographically part of the Comoros island group but not part of the country comoros. The official language is French, but only about half the population understands it; the day-to-day language is Shimaore, a Bantu language in the Comorian family, although many people speak a different language at home. The currency is the Euro.
Mayotte is an overseas region of France and it is part of the European Union. However it is not part of the Schengen agreement. EU citizens and some other nationalities can visit for a short time without a visa. People who require a visa must apply at a French consulate.
