The international community has largely adopted the metric system, originating in 18th-century France and standardized under a regime known as the Système international (SI). Nevertheless, an enormous variety of traditional units remain in use in various parts of the world, notably U.S. customary units, the British imperial system, and many traditional Chinese and Japanese units. Additionally, many metricated but non-standard units find unofficial use, such as the livre or pfund for 500 grams.
