IAH is situated approximately 23 miles (37 km) north of downtown Houston and about 33 miles (53km) from Houston's other airport, Hobby (hou), which lies to the southeast. Named for George H.W. Bush, U.S. President from 1989–1993, IAH was the main hub for Continental Airlines, and remains the busiest hub for united-airlines following their merger. It is a key gateway between the U.S. and Latin America.
Intercontinental's passenger facilities consist of five terminal buildings laid out in a mostly linear fashion, labeled A–E. All are connected airside by walkways and by the Skyway elevated people mover. United and its affiliates have a presence in all five terminals, but operate primarily out of Terminals B, C and E. Most foreign carriers operate out of Terminal D, while other domestic and Canadian carriers operate out of Terminal A.
The airport is convenient to the Sam Houston Parkway (Beltway 8, Houston's ring road) and Interstate 69. Public transportation is limited to METRO bus 102, which stops at the baggage claim level on the south side of Terminal C, and offers connections to downtown. There are no direct connections to Hobby Airport or to Houston's METRORail light rail system.
