Questions tagged [refugees]

Questions about travel as a refugee or asylum-seeker, as defined under international law.

Refugees status is a special status recognized and protected under international treaty. According to the Convention and Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees (also known as the Geneva Convention on Refugees, or the 1951 Convention), a refugee is someone who

Owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence, us unable, or owing to such fear, unwilling to return to it.

Technically, a refugee is someone who has been granted refuge in another country; until acknowledged as such by that country, they may be referred to as an asylum-seeker. Many questions about obtaining refugee status and about living or traveling as a refugee will be better-suited to our sister site, Expatriates Stack Exchange, which handles questions about emigration or long-term relocation to a foreign country.

Questions appropriate for this site and tag include those relating to obtaining refugee travel documents, travel with refugee documents, and visa applications with refugee status.

Questions about traveling as a non-refugee to volunteer with refugees may be better received if tagged as .
